The Company was represented by our Manning & Marine Manager, John G Wood who as well as participating in round table discussions and assisting to launch the Marine Meteorological Services section of the Observatory’s website, accepted a Gold Award on behalf of the Master and Deck Officers onboard the Dapeng Moon who were recognised for voluntarily making in excess of 300 weather observations during 2013.

Presently 2 CLSICO vessels, Dapeng Moon & Dapeng Sun are enrolled as Voluntary Observing Ships, the Company is now working with the HK Observatory to have all 6 ships enrolled.

Ships’ weather observations provide vital information needed to identify the prevailing weather systems and are especially important for the preparation of forecasts for the sea areas and the timely preparation of warnings of hazardous weather conditions. Presently a fleet of over 50 merchant ships which ply between Hong Kong and various ports of the world is maintained. They are equipped with meteorological instruments supplied by the Hong Kong Observatory. Ship officers onboard make regular weather reports and send them to nearby coastal radio stations or coast earth stations for onward transmission to meteorological centres.
